Custom Shadow Boards

5S shadow boards · tool control · visual management

Custom shadow boards, printed and routed from one file.
Every hook lands inside its outline.

Clearview Plastics makes custom tool shadow boards and 5S visual-management boards on rigid aluminum composite (ACM). Tool silhouettes, labels and color-coding are UV-printed at full size; hook and mounting holes are CNC-routed from the same file; hooks and holders are fitted before the board ships. Boards up to 48 × 96 in come out in one piece, with no seam. Quantity one and up, quotes in one business day, $200 minimum order.

Shadow board anatomy A board with a colored header band, printed tool silhouettes, labels under each tool, and routed hook holes placed inside each silhouette. CELL 3 · MAINTENANCE · BOARD A 3/4 COMBO #2 PHILLIPS LINEMAN 9 IN 16 OZ HAMMER PRY BAR · OUT Illustration. Hook holes (white circles) are routed from the same file that placed each printed outline.

Why most shadow boards drift

A shadow board only works if the empty outline is obvious from across the cell.

The board’s whole job is to make a missing tool visible at a glance. That breaks when the outline is a vinyl cut-out that peels at the corners, when the hooks were drilled by hand afterwards and the tool hangs half outside its shadow, or when the pegboard has a hundred holes and the tools wander.

We print the silhouette and route only the holes that tool needs, from one file. The hook can only go where the outline is, the tool can only hang one way, and an empty space reads as empty.

Pegboard and tape

Outlines traced in marker, hooks anywhere on the grid, tools migrate within a month, and nobody can tell what is missing.

Printed and routed

Full-color silhouettes, a label under every tool, holes only where hooks belong, hardware installed, and a file on record to reorder identically.

What we make

Four kinds of board.

Tool shadow boards

Wall boards for a cell, a line or a maintenance crib, sized to the tool set. Silhouettes in the cell’s color, the tool name and size printed under each, the board’s ID in the header.

Cabinet-door & cart panels

Thin 3 mm panels cut to fit inside a cabinet door or on a cart side, with the mounting holes matched to the cabinet you already own.

Cleaning & PPE stations

Brooms, squeegees, dustpans, spill kits, face shields and ear protection, each with a printed home, so the station tells the next shift what belongs on it.

5S & visual-management boards

Red-tag boards, area maps, standard-work and changeover boards, and printed backers that frame the documents a cell posts.

How the board is built

Three decisions that make it last.

One

The outlines are drawn from the real tools

A silhouette that is a catalog clip-art wrench does not match the wrench on the floor. We draw each outline from a full-size tracing of your tools, or from the tools themselves if you ship a set. A PDF proof shows every outline, label and hole at scale before anything is printed.

Two

The print and the holes share one origin

The Mimaki UV flatbed prints the board and the CNC router cuts the outline and every hook hole from the same file, so hole and silhouette agree on the board. Split those across a print shop and a drill and the hooks wander out of the shadows.

Three

The board is ACM, not hardboard

Aluminum composite is two aluminum skins bonded to a polyethylene core. It stays flat across a 4 × 8 ft span, does not swell with humidity the way hardboard does, and wipes clean. Use 6 mm for wall boards carrying heavy tools and 3 mm for cabinet doors.

Specifications

What you are ordering.

Board Aluminum composite (ACM), 3 mm or 6 mm, white face. One piece up to 48 × 96 in; larger walls are built as matched panels from one layout file.
Printing Mimaki JFX200-2513 UV flatbed, 98.4 × 51.2 in bed, full-color CMYK. Color-coding by cell, line, shift or department; logos and board IDs. Laminated over the print when the board lives outdoors.
Routing AXYZ CNC router, sheets up to 5 × 10 ft. Board outline, hook and holder holes, wall-mount holes and any cutouts, from the print file.
Hardware Hooks, spring clips, holders and standoffs installed before shipping. Custom holders for awkward tools 3D-printed in-house.
Mounting Routed through-holes for screws or standoffs at the spacing you give us, or a clean back for your own mounting.
Care Mild detergent and water. If the board lives in a solvent area, tell us: we can print on the back of a clear polycarbonate face, backed with white, so cleaning never touches the ink.
Quote & lead time Quotes within one business day. Ships 5–10 business days after proof approval and payment. $200 minimum order, quantity one and up. Ships nationwide, crated for 4 × 8 boards. No installation.

How it works

Tools in. Board out.

1  Lay it out

Arrange the tools on paper at the board size the way you want them, trace each one, and write its name beside it. Or ship us the tool set and we return it with the board.

2  Quote

Send photos of the layout with a tape measure in frame, the board size, colors and quantity. You get a number within a business day.

3  Proof

A PDF proof at scale with every outline, label and hole. A physical proof is available and credited if the order proceeds.

4  Ship

Printed, routed, hardware installed, packed flat or crated. The file stays on record, so board seven matches board one.

Who we build for

CI leads, maintenance supervisors, tool-control owners and lab managers.

Aerospace and defense quality systems ask for tool accountability: IAQG’s 2016 AS9146 guidance materials for foreign-object-damage prevention call for accounting for and controlling company and personally owned tools, including knowing where tools are at all times. A shadow board is the simplest physical form of that. Clearview Plastics has shipped engineered parts to Lockheed Martin, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Jefferson Lab, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Army and Marine Corps, NOAA, and universities across the country.

We build the board. Your FOD or 5S program, its audits and its certification stay yours.

Questions we get

Straight answers.

How do you get the shape of our tools?

Two ways. Trace each tool on paper at full size in the arrangement you want and mail the sheet, or ship us the tool set and we trace it here and send it back with the board. Either way, you approve a PDF proof at scale before anything is printed.

Can I order one board?

Yes. Quantity one and up with no tooling charge, and a $200 minimum order. Layout and art time appear as their own line on the quote, so a second identical board costs only the board.

What is the largest board you make?

48 × 96 in in one piece, printed in a single pass on a 98.4 × 51.2 in flatbed. A wall larger than that is built as matched panels from one layout file, so the header and color bands line up across the joints.

What happens when our tool set changes?

Send the change and we revise the file. Because the print and the holes come from one layout, a revised board is a file edit, not a redraw, and identical boards for other cells reorder from the same file.

Can a board go outdoors?

Yes, laminated. Boards are built for indoor cells as standard; for an outdoor or yard station we laminate over the print, because Mimaki specifies a laminate or overcoat for this ink outdoors.

Do shadow boards satisfy AS9146 tool control?

A board is one physical tool inside a FOD prevention program, not the program. It makes a missing tool obvious, which supports the accountability the AS9146 guidance asks for. Your procedures, audits and certification stay with your quality team.

Do you take purchase orders?

Businesses pay by card or ACH when the order is placed; a W-9 is available on request. Government agencies and schools can order on a purchase order with net terms on orders of $3,000 or more.

Request a quote

Send the tool list.

Attach a photo of the layout with a tape measure in frame. In the message, give the board size, the number of tools, the color scheme, how many boards, and the ship-to ZIP. You get a number within one business day.

Trace the tools. We will build the board.

Layout photo, board size, colors, quantity, ship-to. One board is a real order.
