The Directed Energy Deposition (DED) Metal 3D Printer Enclosure by Clearview Plastics is a heavy-duty, industrial-grade containment enclosure for laser DED metal additive systems. DED builds and repairs metal parts by using a focused fiber laser to melt metal powder or wire as it's deposited — a Class 4, 1064 nm process that throws intense light, metal fume, and spatter. Built from 1/4" aluminum composite panels with an OD7+ 1064 nm laser-safety viewing window, this enclosure contains the beam, the glare, and the fume so you can run metal deposition in a shared or indoor space.
Based on the largest size of our fiber laser marker enclosure, it gives you a full XL+ working envelope — 21.5" W × 29.5" D × 38.25" H — with room for a DED head, feedstock, and workpiece. It's a "set-over" enclosure that assembles with a screwdriver and hex wrench, or ships delivered assembled, and configures with the doors, sealing, interlock, and filtration a metal-AM shop needs.
Directed Energy Deposition (also called laser metal deposition, LMD, or laser cladding) melts metal powder or wire feedstock with a focused laser to build up, coat, or repair metal parts. It's a fast, powerful process — and an open DED head is one of the more hazardous things you can run on a bench: an invisible 1064 nm beam, blinding process light, hot spatter, and a plume of fine metal fume. This enclosure is sized and shielded to wrap a desktop / benchtop DED cell and bring all of that under control.
Running a specific DED head or a higher-power system? Send us your machine, laser power, and footprint and we'll confirm the fit and the right window/panel spec before you buy.
DED generates fine metal fume and particulate that you do not want in your breathing zone. Capture it at the source:
This enclosure is designed for laser-light and fume containment. It is not a fire-rated or thermal chamber. DED is a high-temperature process involving molten metal, and some feedstocks — especially reactive metal powders such as titanium and aluminum — carry fire and explosion hazards. You are responsible for thermal management, fire safety, inert-gas / atmosphere requirements, and safe handling of reactive materials per your machine manufacturer and local codes. The enclosure contains stray light and fume but does not reclassify your Class 4 laser and is not certified to ANSI standards. Always wear OD-rated 1064 nm safety glasses and never defeat your machine's interlocks. Contact us to review your power level and setup before ordering.
Neil Henderson here, owner and head designer at Clearview Plastics. My shop is a California-based artisan design studio, and we build every enclosure in-house in Sacramento. Our panels are professionally CNC-cut for accuracy, with parts designed specifically for each machine we support — this isn't a generic box off a marketplace. When you order through us, you work directly with me, and that relationship comes with my genuine appreciation and skilled, personal help.
What is DED and why enclose it?
Directed Energy Deposition melts metal powder or wire with a focused laser to build or repair metal parts. The process produces an invisible 1064 nm beam, intense process light, hot spatter, and fine metal fume — this enclosure contains the light and captures the fume so you can run it safely indoors.
Does this block the 1064 nm laser?
It's built to contain it: aluminum composite panels stop stray/reflected beams and the OD7+ viewing window is rated for 1064 nm so you can watch the melt pool. Always still wear OD-rated 1064 nm safety glasses — the enclosure contains the beam but is not certified to ANSI standards and does not reclassify your Class 4 laser.
What about heat, fire, and reactive metals?
This is a light-and-fume containment enclosure, not a fire-rated or inert-atmosphere chamber. High heat, molten metal, and reactive powders (titanium, aluminum) carry fire/explosion risk that this enclosure does not mitigate. Follow your machine manufacturer's thermal, atmosphere, and material-handling requirements and local codes. Contact us to review your setup.
What are the exhaust and filtration options?
A 4" exhaust adapter is included. Add a 95 CFM or 200 CFM fan or our window exhaust kit, or step up to a heavy-duty Donaldson AD350 filtration unit built for metal and laser fume.
What size is it, and can I get a custom envelope?
This is our largest XL+ size (21.5 × 29.5 × 38.25"). If your DED cell needs a different envelope, contact us — we build to order.
What is your return policy?
We offer a 30-day return policy. Unused, undamaged panels with the masking fully attached are eligible for a full refund less return shipping. If panels are damaged after shipment or the protective mask has been removed, we can't offer a refund.
We can ship to virtually any address in the world. International orders include brokerage fees for customs. Duties, VAT, taxes, and other fees may need to be collected prior to delivery. Every country and local is different so we cannot provide an exact estimate of these fees.
When you place an order, we will estimate shipping and delivery dates for you based on the availability of your items and the shipping options you choose. Depending on the shipping provider you choose, shipping date estimates may appear on the shipping quotes page.
Please also note that the shipping rates for many items we sell are weight-based. The weight of any such item can be found on its detail page. To reflect the policies of the shipping companies we use, all weights will be rounded up to the next full pound.
