That is not a criticism of either company, it is just what the catalogue says. The Fisherbrand FB432A and the Qsonica 432B2 are the same enclosure. One goes through a lab distributor and one does not, and the spread is roughly two to one.

What it is for

A 20 kHz probe running at power produces a high-frequency screech that is genuinely painful and drives everybody out of a shared room. It is an occupancy problem before it is a hearing problem — the person three benches away stops working. Secondly, probe sonication of biological samples generates aerosol, and a closed box with a latched door is the standard engineering control for that.

How it works, mechanically

Two things in series. Mass — the panel itself blocks transmission, and thicker plastic blocks more of it. Absorption — open-cell foam lining the interior kills the reverberant buildup that would otherwise leak straight back out the seams. Neither one works without the other, and neither one works at all if the box leaks.

Where these usually fail, and what we do about it

Seam leakage. A bracket-and-panel enclosure has continuous seams, and an unsealed seam will hand you a fraction of the reduction you paid for. So every joint gets closed-cell gasket tape and the door gets a compression latch, not a magnet — a magnet holds a door closed, it does not pull it into a gasket. This is the detail that decides whether the product works, and it is the first thing we would ask a competitor about.

If you need a verified attenuation figure for an EHS file, buy from someone who has tested and published one. We would rather lose the order than invent a number.

Often someone who bought a used Branson, Misonix or Qsonica on LabX for $1,500–$3,000 without the original enclosure, and now has a screaming instrument in a shared room.
