Everyone who solders knows the little clip-on fume fan. It gets the plume out of your immediate face, which is most of the benefit, and then it puts that plume somewhere else in the same room. For an hour of occasional work, fine. For a rework bench somebody sits at all day, it is not a control — it is a redirect.
At the other end, a ductless soldering booth from a lab-furniture brand runs from roughly £336 to £2,250, and a certified downflow bench enclosure is $5,767 and up. Between the clip-on fan and that is a gap nobody credible is filling.
Rosin-based solder flux fume is, in the UK Health and Safety Executive's own words, "a top cause of occupational asthma." They publish dedicated guidance for electronics soldering on exactly those grounds. It is not an odour you get used to — it is a sensitisation problem, and sensitisation is permanent. Separately and more mundanely: the same plume fogs optics, films your tweezers, and causes bridges and cold joints because you cannot see the pad clearly through the smoke.
CNC-cut panels, all brackets and assembly hardware, and written instructions. Filters and inline fans are sold separately.
This hood contains the plume and gives it a path out. It is not a certified fume hood: no ANSI/ASHRAE 110 testing, no SEFA 9, no capture-efficiency, airflow or health claims from us. Ducted outside, it moves fume out of your breathing zone; with a consumer-tier carbon filter, it reduces fumes and smells. If you need validated containment for regulated substances, buy certified lab furniture.
Standard acrylic is not static-dissipative. On an ESD-controlled bench that matters, and we would rather raise it than have you find out. We can build this in static-dissipative sheet at a material premium, or you can run it as-is alongside an ionizer. Tell us which bench this is going on and we will spec it properly.
