Your face is six inches from the plume

Hand soldering under a stereo microscope puts your head directly in the column rising off the iron. Rosin-based solder flux fume is a recognised cause of occupational asthma — the UK Health and Safety Executive regulates it on exactly those grounds. The same plume fogs your objective lenses and leaves a film on tweezers, stage and board.

This hood puts a five-sided shell over the working volume and gives that plume somewhere to go. The front stays open. Your hands stay in the work, your eyes stay on the oculars, and the column that used to rise into your face is drawn up and out through a 4" port instead.

Why open-front

A 3D printer runs unattended behind a shut door. A microscope is the opposite — it is a hands-in, eyes-on tool, continuously attended. A sealed box around one is unusable. So this is not a box. It is a capture hood sized to clear a boom stand, with a full open work face and no door in your way.

Straight talk about what this does

This hood contains the plume and gives it a path out. It is not a certified fume hood: we do not test to ANSI/ASHRAE 110 or SEFA 9 and we make no capture-efficiency, airflow or health claims. Ducted outside it moves the fume out of your breathing zone. With a consumer-tier carbon filter it reduces fumes and smells. If you need validated containment for regulated chemistry, buy a certified lab hood — that is a different product and we will tell you so.

Sizing

Boom-stand geometry varies enormously by arm extension and ring-light choice, and almost no microscope vendor publishes body dimensions. Measure your working envelope and send it over before ordering — we build to your bench, and we would rather size it right than ship you a hood that fouls your arm.
